The Story Behind the Sugi Tree

 

 

The name Sugi Tree Studio was inspired by the Japanese cedar tree — sugi (杉) — a symbol of strength, resilience, and harmony with nature.

One of the most meaningful stories surrounding the Sugi tree comes from Nikkō, Japan, where a daimyō (feudal lord) who could not afford to donate a traditional stone lantern for Tokugawa Ieyasu’s memorial instead offered to plant an avenue of Sugi trees — so future visitors could find shade and comfort beneath them.

His gift became the Cedar Avenue of Nikkō, a breathtaking pathway that still stands today, with over 200,000 trees planted over 350 years ago. Rather than creating something temporary, he planted something that would grow, protect, and inspire generations to come.

This spirit is at the heart of Sugi Tree Studio. Before founding the brand, our founder spent time planting trees in Northern Ontario, deepening her connection to the natural world and the importance of creating a lasting impact.

Inspired by the ancient Sugi trees of Japan and the belief that small actions can grow into something meaningful, Sugi Tree Studio creates products designed to bring moments of grounding, intention, and connection into everyday rituals.

Just as the Sugi trees of Nikkō continue to give back to generations of visitors, we believe in creating a positive impact that extends beyond our products.
